The 8th Annual Dinner and Auction to benefit KITH (Kirkland Interfaith Transitions in Housing) programs for homeless families in East King County will be held from 2-6 p.m. Oct. 2 at the Hilton Bellevue.

Homelessness is a problem in East King County. Eastside school districts report 564 children are homeless, even with working parents. Eastside Homeless Advisory Committee (EHAC) reports that a medical assistant working in an Eastside hospital makes $16.20 per hr, but it takes $22.60 for a single adult raising a preschooler in East King County to pay childcare, groceries, transportation, taxes and health care.

Housing is essential for education and opportunities for homeless children and youth improving long-term life and employment. One of KITH’s key strategies in ending homelessness is to work directly with the family, providing life skills training and other assistance that promotes self-sufficiency. A great majority of the families KITH serves have been affected by domestic violence. Not only have the parents been affected, but the children are victims as well. The services KITH offers ensure a safe home for children.

It is almost impossible for a child to sit at his/her desk and be ready to learn if the child is suffering from fear and anxiety. After only a short period of time in KITH housing, the case managers can see the child’s demeanor become more confident and happy. Case managers also work with parents to model good parenting behavior. When families are in transitional housing, we encourage them to envision a new future. Children also need an opportunity to envision a positive future. Early intervention prevents many more difficult problems.
