Community School picks peppers, slurps soup and helps Hopelink

Last spring, Community School rebuilt their garden area, with the help of grant money they received from both Home Depot and Pepsi. This fall, students from grades 1-6 harvested a heap from their bountiful little beds. The kids buddied up to pick corn, onions, herbs, cucumber and carrots, several squash, and (from a pair of prolific plants) a peck of peppers! Having read “Stone Soup” (by Jon J. Muth) throughout the school the previous week, they all knew what to do: Parents washed and chopped vegetables all morning, and the kids collected smooth, round stones at recess. At lunch break, the sound of soup slurping was punctuated by appreciative “ahs” as teachers and parents dished up soup from their truly “Community” cauldron. What happened to the peck of peppers? They were donated to Hopelink, along with a few other vegetables, because at Community School, working together, and sharing the fruit of your labor, is a tasty undertaking.
