Just imagine if the shortsighted naysayers and fear mongers of the 1970s transportation proposal had not gotten their way. We would have a rail transportation system that could take us from Kirkland to Seattle, West Seattle to the U District, Ballard to the airport and all points in between.
Representative Roger Goodman deserves our vote for reelection because he is a highly effective legislator for public safety, judicial issues, and the environment. This last legislative session alone, he was the prime sponsor for 32 bills and a secondary sponsor for nearly 200 bills.
Can you imagine a world without apples, strawberries, carrots, cocoa, coffee, or cotton? That means no fruit, no vegetables, no Starbucks, less clothes, etc… This will all be a reality if bees go extinct.
I have had the pleasure of knowing Shelley since our kids were in grade school. From the beginning, she was happy to help out with vision screenings, fundraisers, field trips, and the like, but she really found her home in the advocacy committee. In no time she was learning about the issues that faced our kids, and wrote legislators to share the needs of students. She moved up in the ranks to serve on the PTSA council, recruiting and training advocacy chairs. She went to Olympia on many PTA Focus Day events to meet legislators and advocate for kids. Eventually, she served for two years as the legislative director for the Washington State PTA, and I’ve joined her in Olympia and have seen her in action. She was never afraid to speak up and ask the hard questions.
The race for Washington State Treasurer is one of historical proportions. For the first time in 60 years, a Republican will be elected to that office. In this race, voters would be best served by electing Duane Davidson.
I am writing in response to the multiple letters extolling the qualifications of Ramiro Valderrama for Washington State Representative. While I have been a supporter of Councilman Valderrama since he first ran for his Sammamish City Council position, I cannot help but be more than a little concerned about his decision to declare as a Republican, and the ensuing implications (based on recent trends in Washington state legislation).
In all seriousness, I have to wonder if the “No on Prop1/ST3” crowd is blind, or has no commute, or knows no one who commutes in this area. Having lived on the Eastside for almost 20 years now, I have seen 405 go from very congested for a few hours a day, to a parking lot for nearly half the day. This is lack of public planning and lack of imagination at its finest. Rail is how the rest of the world moves tons of people quickly, reliably, and efficiently. Go to Asia, go to Europe, heck, even go to NYC and see how rail works. We’ve tried the “add more lanes” approach and guess what, we’re all clogged up again. Those of us who’d like to have an alternative to sitting in traffic going no where deserve one.
We need a change in Olympia. Roger Goodman has been around too long. In my view, he no longer represents the changing needs of the district.
We should be more interested in our city, with the heroin dealers killing our teenagers and exposing them through the use of our media, for who they are.
Trump supporters, I have good news and bad news. The good news is, your neighbor’s vote won’t help Clinton get elected. The bad news is, your vote won’t help Trump get elected.
So far in the Presidential debates this year we have not heard a word about climate change even though this is an existential issue. Tax returns have been debated; lost emails have been debated. But these are trivial compared to the prospect of an unlivable climate in the year 2090.
I hope 45th District residents will vote for Ramiro Valderrama this November.
Change, it’s inevitable and I’ve never lived anywhere that has had so much razing and rising “up” for future benefit and profit in such a short period of time. Everyone is impacted, inconvenienced and even saddened by many of the changes happening on the Eastside. Maybe you’ve lost your favorite movie theater, albeit it was small, your favorite fish market, bakery, workout spot, view, restaurant, book store… it’s not just Redmond, it’s Kirkland and of course, Bellevue.
In the midst of the angry world of politics, which seems uglier by the day, we should all be grateful that Washington’s elections are trustworthy, accurate, and run by Secretary of State Kim Wyman. She is a leader who has kept Washington’s edge in voter registration, turnout, and ballot security.
With election day right around the corner, everyone one of us needs to think about what is at stake this year. Working people know that the path to prosperity starts with electing candidates who support a raising wage agenda. We have the opportunity to win equal pay, paid leave, fair scheduling and higher wages. These are just some of the reasons why Donald Trump is not the best choice for America.
Citizens want to be heard. They have concerns and they have needs in their community. Electing a representative that will hear and act on those needs and concerns is of great importance. It’s how you make sure that the need is addressed, and in a responsive and timely manner.
The Kirkland Promise Committee, the education committee of the Greater Kirkland Chamber of Commerce thanks the Kirkland Kiwanis and Kirkland Rotary Club’s generous donations of $2,000 each to purchase the book “Zero to Five” by Tracy Cutchlow. This book teaches parents and others how children learned based on the academic studies and shares techniques for helping children grow and develop themselves.
Having lived on the Eastside for nearly 50 years, I have seen many positive changes in our neighborhoods, much of it due to the work of our forward-thinking representatives in the state legislature. In particular, the 45th Legislative District has been competently served by Roger Goodman over the course of his five terms in office.
We have given the national media power to control our choices for president. Yet The Detroit News, who endorsed Republicans for the past 143 years; the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the hometown newspaper of Democratic Vice-presidential candidate Tim Kaine; and the Chicago Tribune, President Obama’s hometown paper, all endorse Libertarians Gary Johnson/Bill Weld. But the national print, talk, TV media tell us we have only Trump and Hillary as choices.
Thank you to the City of Kirkland for digging out our ditches on Finn Hill.
