Give it your all in the playoffs and appreciate the moment / Sports Scene

Athletes and coaches have unveiled their best performances in the regular season, and now the postseason is upon us.

Strap in tight and prepare for an intense ride.

Our publications have highlighted some of the area’s top players and teams over the last two months to set the stage for what awaits. Basketball, wrestling, swimming and diving and gymnastics are the spotlight sports for the winter season and we’re putting our best feet forward in covering them from now until the state tournaments conclude.

League, districts, regionals and then state. There’s a lot on our local athletes’ dockets and I’m sure they’re ready to rise to the occasion.

As a former athlete and then a sports writer, I’m always thrilled when playoff time comes. As if the teams haven’t already created memorable moments during the regular season and preseason, there’s those eye-popping postseason plays that are waiting just around the corner to set off emotional fireworks for both players, coaches and fans alike. The sports fuse is ready for a spark. Light it up.

Remember that along with striving for excellence, show appreciation for being in this postseason spot. Some things will go your way, and at times, you’ll fall short, but you should always be thankful that you’ve been given the opportunity to compete on this level. Support your teammates and coaches and also put sportsmanship on a pedestal by telling your opponents that they put in a solid effort. We’re all in this together and that’s what makes this sports world exciting: athletes going toe to toe and letting the energy fly.

Good luck to all in the postseason.
