Kirkland’s Eastside Community Aid Thrift Shop approves 20 grants

Eastside Community Aid Thrift Shop approved 20 grants, awarded five scholarships and donated money to one philanthropic organization who earned their ECA funds by providing volunteers at the shop for 2014.

Eastside Community Aid (ECA) Thrift Shop approved 20 grants, awarded five scholarships and donated money to one philanthropic organization who earned their ECA funds by providing volunteers at the shop for 2014.

The following 20 organizations received grant money: Hopelink – $5,000; Safe Kids Eastside – $3,000; Assistance League® of the Eastside for Operation School Bell® – $5,000; Eastside Baby Corner – $5,000; Eastside Legal Services Program – $5,000; Congregations for the Homeless – $5,000; Friends of Youth – $5,000; Studio East – $5,000; Farms For Life – $5,000; KITH – $5,000; Raven Rock Ranch (sponsor a horse) – $5,000; The Sophia Way – $5,000; KIN – $5,000; Lifewire  $5,000; Bridge Disability Ministries (BDM) – $5,000; Sibling House – $5,000; Lil Bit Therapeutic Riders (sponsor a horse) – $5,000; HERO House – $5,000; SHARE/WHEEL – $5,000; and Eastside Timebank $1,500.

Three Cascadia Community College scholarships were awarded to the following students: Erin Gayatri – $2,000 for engineering; Mary Nystrom – $2,000 human service; and Simon Okelo – $2,000 human service.

Two Lake Washington Institute of Technology scholarships were awarded to the following students: Kenia Janson – $2,000 human service; and Elizabeth Penix – $2,000 human service.

Phi Beta Psi Philanthropic Organization earned $2,109 at the Thrift Shop by providing wonderful volunteers on the third Saturday of each month. They will use their earned funds for a cancer research service project.

Eastside Community Aid Thrift Shop located at 12451 116th Ave. NE in Kirkland, is an all-volunteer run thrift shop whose proceeds are donated back into the community through grants to 501(c)(3) organizations. Volunteers are always needed. Volunteering at this organization can be fun and rewarding. Clean, resalable donations can be dropped off at the shop during business hours Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. ECA now has extended hours on Fridays until 6 p.m. More information can be found on their website at www.ecathriftshop.org.
