Juanita girls tennis advances one to Sea-King district tournament

The Juanita tennis team will have one player representing the school in next week's district competition. Maria Jourvaleva finished the KingCo tournament Tuesday afternoon with a second place to claim her spot at districts.

The Juanita tennis team will have one player representing the school in next week’s district competition. Maria Jouravleva finished the KingCo tournament Tuesday afternoon with a second place to claim her spot at districts. The tournament, held at Skyline High School in Sammamish, began last Saturday and finished Tuesday after weather delays on Monday.

Jouravleva finished in 2nd losing to Nora Tan of Mercer Island 6-3, 6-2. She beat Amber Eastham of Liberty in the quarterfinals 7-5, 6-1 before beating Ellie Rudee 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals. Teammate Devin Clawson, the No. 4 seed going into the KingCo tournament beat Kaitlyn Ussleman of Mount Si 7-5, 6-1 before losing to Tan in the quarterfinals 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (9-7). After moving in the consolation bracket Clawson beat Emmie Kellogg-Smith of Liberty and lost to Eastham in the consolation semifinals.

In the doubles competition Alanda Hilborn and Lucy Weber lost their first round match to Shelby Thomas and Bailey Barnard of Mount Si. They advanced to the consolation semifinals, playing London Lee and Sabrina Tu of Bellevue for fourth place. The Rebels second doubles team of Ashley Manzoni and Molly Ichikawa beat Alison Martin and Jaime Hitchcock of Liberty in the first round, before falling to the eventual third place finishers Kelly Crandall and Julia Zook of Mercer Island in the second round. The duo lost their second meeting to Martin and Hitchcock from Liberty in the consolation bracket and lost again in the semfinals to Shelby Thomas and Bailey Bernard of Mount Si.

Jouravleva will be the Rebels sole player in the district competition which begins next Tuesday, May 18 at Lower Woodland Park in Seattle.
