All three 4A KingCo Crown Division leaders for boys basketball lost Tuesday night including the Kangs. Lake Washington lost a very close game at Newport 89-86 in overtime after battling back from a deep halftime deficit.

The Kangs started slow, falling 16 points behind the Knights after 16 minutes of play. But a big third quarter, where the team managed to outscore the home squad 24-13, allowed Lake Washington to gain some momentum heading into the final quarter of regulation. The Kangs completed the comeback before the end of the fourth quarter, outscoring Newport 25-20, sending the game into overtime. But the Knights utilized their home-court advantage to win, outscoring the Kangs 13-10.

Lake Washington was led by Dallas Searles, who scored a season high 28 points, during the contest. The scoring output was 11 points better than his previous high for the season during the opener against Renton. Alex Houghton (15 points), Darien Nelson-Henry (14) and Matt Staudacher (13) also contributed to the effort for the Kangs. But the lack of help off the bench hurt Lake Washington, as just two other players scored. The loss drops the Kangs to 8-5 in league play.

Inglemoor lost to Eastlake 64-56, while Woodinville lost to Skyline 52-44, to complete the sweep of the top three teams Tuesday.

The Kangs will tip off at 8 p.m. on Friday, as they host Bothell. The game will take place after a ceremony for the closing of the Chapple Gymnasium, which will be torn down after the season is over to make way for the school’s new court.
