4A KingCo tourney: Lake Washington girls hold off Skyline, 43-40

The Lake Washington girls basketball team held off a fourth-quarter charge by Skyline, 43-40, to advance in the 4A KingCo tournament Saturday at Juanita High School.

The Spartans showed that they were ready to play following the tip off, jumping out to a slim three-point lead after the first eight minutes of play. But the Kangs’ defense woke up during the second quarter, holding Skyline to just eight points.

Lake Washington took its biggest lead of the game during the third quarter and began the fourth with a nine-point lead. Skyline played with a sense of urgency during the final eight minutes of play but could not overcome the Kangs’ lead.

Lake Washington utilized a balanced offensive attack that featured five different players scoring multiple times from the floor. Kang Katarina Whitfield led all scorers with 11 points during the contest.

The Kangs will host Eastlake at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday at Juanita High School during the next round of the tournament.
