Kelly Watanabe and Dawn Wyruchowski of Kirkland are among 55 Linfield College students participating this fall in a Linfield study abroad program.

Watanabe, a junior, is majoring in exercise science with a minor in Spanish. The daughter of Guy and Audrey Watanabe of Kirkland, she is a member of the Linfield tennis team. Watanabe is spending a semester in San Ramón, Costa Rica, and living with a host family. She is examining different ecosystems and wildlife, learning the history of the country, and participating in service projects with local schools and organizations.

Wyruchowski, a junior, is majoring in English with a minor in Japanese. The daughter of Karen Larsen and Ed Wyruchowski of Kirkland, she volunteers with Homeward Bound Pets, and is a member of Fusion and Residence Life at Linfield. Wyruchowski is studying at Kanto Gakuin University, Linfield’s sister college in Yokohama, Japan. Housing for Linfield students at KGU is a combination of a home stay and campus housing, approximately a 10-minute walk from the university. She is spending time with Japanese families and exploring Yokohama and Tokyo with KGU exchange students who have attended Linfield.

The Linfield College study abroad programs are designed for students who have completed one or two years of study in the appropriate foreign language at Linfield and who will return to the college to share their international experiences with others in the campus community. Linfield also offers study abroad opportunities in locations where foreign language is not required, such as Hong Kong, Ireland, England, Korea, Norway, Australia, Austria and New Zealand, where students may choose courses taught in English.

The curriculum includes language instruction as well as studies in the culture, politics, economics, history and art of the country. The program is open to sophomores, juniors and seniors, and selection is made on a competitive basis. Linfield covers the cost of the first round-trip airfare when students qualify. Students pay regular Linfield tuition and a program fee.
