Optimists to charter new club in Kirkland

A new Optimist Club is being formed to serve the youth of Kirkland.

A new Optimist Club is being formed to serve the youth of Kirkland.

Why start a new club now? Ed Murphy, Governor of the Pacific Northwest District of Optimist International and a resident of Redmond said, “I believe the youth of Kirkland need the positive direction and activities that an Optimist Club provides.”

This new club has already talked about getting involved in the Boys & Girls clubs on the Eastside. The organization has also talked about running oratorical contests, internet safety programs and other community activities. Some members are interested in helping local schools and students with academic needs.

The new club will also raise money to meet needs of youth in the Kirkland area.

You are invited to become a member of the Kirkland Optimist Club. The next meeting begins at 7 p.m. Monday, March 14 at the Coast To Coast Driving School, 12305 120th Ave. N.E., Suite G in Kirkland. The club will also meet at 7 p.m. March 24 and 31 at the same location.

March 24 will be a presentation on a childhood cancer camp for children with cancer and their siblings. This camp sometimes provides the only break the parents have to take a vacation for the year. March 31 will be a simulated board meeting so potential members can see how the club makes operating decisions, such as club dues. This meeting will also serve as a nominating committee for Charter Club Officers. The club will be organized in early April.

There is a $30 application fee to join the club. Annual dues will be set when the club is chartered and will be determined by the club membership. Annual dues will range between $100-$120 per year paid in quarterly installments. For more information, e-mail Ed Murphy at emurphy@Costco.com.
