Lake Washington Schools Foundation inspires summer reading

Lake Washington Schools Foundation welcomed one of its community partners, AXA Advisors, to a Summer Literacy Camp at AG Bell Elementary in Kirkland on July 30.

The Literacy Camp was one of 41 classroom and school Enrichment grant recipients from the foundation in the 2008-09 school year, and provided an intensive 4-week program to help struggling readers achieve or retain grade level in the fall. AXA volunteers and foundation trustees brought favorite books to read with students and donate to the school.

AXA employees volunteered at the Literacy Camp as part of the AXA Day of Service, where offices nationwide donate time and resources to a local non-profit organization. A picnic following the morning camp session brought together teachers and students, AXA partners, Lake Washington Schools Foundation Board Trustees, and Lake Washington School District Superintendant Dr. Chip Kimball to celebrate the community partnership. As part of the Day of Service, AXA presented a check for $3,000 to the foundation.

As an advocate for educational excellence, the foundation raises funds, gathers resources and acts as a catalyst to involve the community in the education of 23,000 students in 49 schools in Kirkland, Redmond, and Sammamish.
