Kirkland resident, Amazon executive Tom Phillips dies in Michigan plane crash

What was supposed to be a 4.5 mile, six-minute flight ended up taking the life of Kirkland resident and Amazon.com executive Tom Phillips and another person on Saturday in Michigan. Phillips, 52, was flying with pilot Joe Pann, 29, when the single-engine Piper Saratoga operated by Great Lakes Air left St. Ignace, Mich. for Mackinac Island on Saturday night, where Phillips owned a home.

Phillips, 52, was flying with pilot Joe Pann, 29, when the single-engine Piper Saratoga  operated by Great Lakes Air left St. Ignace, Mich. for Mackinac Island on Saturday night, where Phillips owned a home.

When the plane failed to reach it’s destination, a search involving federal, state and local officials was started on Lake Huron.Searchers found the plane on Sunday, 110 yards off shore and about three miles north of St. Ignace.

Both men were found dead according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

Phillips, who has his pilot’s license, was manager of Amazon Web Services and also a former Microsoft employee. He joined Amazon earlier this year after nearly two decades at Microsoft. Federal investigators arrived Monday to investigate the cause of the crash.
