Kirkland Kiwanis not only raised the banners, but is expanding in Kirkland’s annexation area. During October, Kiwanis International sponsored Key Clubs were the center of attention at three Kirkland high schools.

Lake Washington High School was founded Sept. 30, 1985, so as part of their 25th anniversary celebration, a new Key Club banner was recently presented to the school. The faculty advisor there is Haley Woods and the Kiwanis advisor is Mark Shinstrom – both are LWHS graduates. About 45 members attended the event at the club meeting, regularly held after school on Mondays.

A new Key Club banner was also presented to the International Community School Key Club. The faculty advisor there is Paul Plank and the Kiwanis advisor is Ralph Villavicencio. The ICS Key Club, chartered March 20, 2008, is very active this year with about 45 members meeting weekly during Thursday lunch.

The first official meeting of the new Juanita High School Key Club was held on Oct. 27. Regular meetings times will be held on Wednesdays during lunch. The faculty advisor there is David Ostrer, new to JHS, and the Kiwanis advisor is Jay Henwood, who was in the first JHS graduating class. This new club representing the Kirkland annexation area is starting off with 17 members, newly elected officers and community service projects in the Finn Hill and Totem Lake areas. Official chartering will occur in the next few months.

When LWSD’s high schools go to 9-12 grades in 2012, the clubs are expected to grow even more.
