Kirkland Mayor Joan McBride will speak at the Northlake Unitarian Universalist Church on Sunday for “Kirkland 4 Marriage.” The event is geared toward calling voters to support same-sex marriage in the November general election.

“I’m happy to support marriage equality,” McBride said. “It’s great for the Eastside to show that it’s also very progressive.”

The event is run by Washington United for Marriage, a Political Action Committee and nonprofit, that represents more than 500 organizations, congregations, unions and businesses that support same-sex marriage. Their hope is to convince voters to vote yes on Referendum 74.

Legislators from the 45th and 48th Districts have been invited to speak at the event but Washington United Kirkland organizer Kenyon Foxworthy said none of them have confirmed at this time.

Rev. Marian Stewart of the Northlake Unitarian Universalist Church said she hopes a “full house” of more than 100 show up to the event.

“The congregation is fully supportive of the freedom for people to choose who to marry.” Stewart said. “People love who they love.”

Preserve Marriage Washington, a movement to deter same-sex marriage, was the main advocacy group to petition R-74 to the general election ballot for Nov. 6. Joseph Backholm is the man behind Preserve Marriage Washington and the director of the Family Policy Institute.

Gov. Chris Gregoire signed the marriage equality bill to law last winter during the 2012 regular legislative session.

Supporters are welcome to join the Kirkland 4 Marriage at Northlake Unitarian, located at 308 4th Avenue S. from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.
