It’s that time of year again, where Washington residents will have an opporutnity to practice what to do in an earthquake.
Millions of people worldwide will practice drop, cover, hold at 10:19 on Oct. 19 during the Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills.
“Participating is a great way for your family or organization to be prepared to survive and recover quickly from big earthquakes — whever you live, work, or travel,” according to the ShakeOut website.
To register your participation in The Great Washington ShakeOut, visit www.shakeout.org/washington/register. You don’t have to register to participate; it just helps identify how many people and organizations took part in the preparedness event.
Another way to prepare for an earthquake is to take proactive measures, like removing heavy items that sit or hang above your bed, securing furniture and water heaters, and preparing “go bags.”
In the event of a major disaster, residents are told to be prepared to be on their own for at least two weeks.
