Finalists advance to national contest

The Washington State Historical Society, Washington state organizers for the National History Day (NHD) contest, announced this year’s Washington History Day contest winners, including several from Kirkland’s International Community School. Winners advanced to the NHD contest this week at the University of Maryland.

Working individually or in groups, junior (grades 6-8) and senior (grades 9-12) division students selected and researched a topic related to this year’s theme, ‘The Individual in History: Actions and Legacies’.

ICS finalists include: Senior Individual Documentary: Nathan Maris, J. Harlen Bretz and the Great Missoula Flood: An Individual and His Radical Geologic Theory; Senior Individual Performance: Abby Burlingame, Jessie Benton Fremont: Shrewd Strategist, Compassionate Wife; Senior Group Performance: Libby Zorn, Emma Tremblay, Alexandra Drury, Monisha Gulabani, Finding a Fresh Angle: How Nellie Bly’s Adventurous Exploits Transcended Women’s Societal Rules.

History Day is a nationally acclaimed education program that challenges students to become historians, explorers and leaders.
