Rose Hill Middle School (RHMS) PTSA and My Floss Productions is presenting Disney’s “Mulan Jr.”

This will be the school’s third production.

“Mulan Jr.” tells the story of Mulan and her mischievous dragon sidekick, Mushu, and their journey to save the emperor from the invading Huns. Defying the village matchmaker, Mulan takes up arms and disguises herself as a boy in order to spare her father from having to serve in the army. As the great battle with the Huns approaches, Mulan must choose between revealing her true identity as a girl or saving all of China with her plan.

Shanna Barr, an RHMS PTSA member, is one of the co-producers for the production. She said when she and the other members of the PTSA were researching for the school’s next musical, they were searching for a “fun script and fun songs.”

“We really wanted to do a musical and when we came across [‘Mulan Jr.’], it had such a fun script, fun songs and knew that it could appeal to everyone,” Barr said. “It also shares a strong message promoting girl power.”

The process for organizing and casting the production began last November. It’s been a smooth process, according to Barr.

“We’ve been having so much fun and all the kids are really committed,” she said.

Although three rehearsals were cancelled due to the February snowstorms, Barr said it didn’t have a negative impact on the students or the show. Since November, the cast has been rehearsing two days a week for at least three hours at a time.

Barr’s daughter, Brooke Barr, stars as Mushu in RHMS’s “Mulan Jr.”

“It’s been really fun. The director has kind of let me loose as Mushu is kind of the comic relief in the show,” Brooke, an eighth grader, said. “It’s been a learning experience to have this kind of free range and try new things but it’s been a lot of fun and I’ve made a lot of new friends.”

According to Barr, it’s been rewarding to see the students push themselves outside of their boundaries.

“It’s been great to see the kids really push themselves and see the camaraderie they have formed with each other,” Barr said. “They’re so excited to share this show with others.”

RHMS’s production of “Mulan Jr.” is set for 7 p.m. on March 22 and 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. on March 23. It will be performed at the Lake Washington High School theater, located at 12033 NE 80th St. in Kirkland. Tickets are $8 and can be purchased at the door or at www.tinyurl.com/mulantickets.
