Stingy defense propels Rebels to a victory against the Wolverines

Bellevue unleashes a bevy of shots on goal in loss to Juanita.

Throughout the duration of the second half, the Bellevue Wolverines unleashed a plethora of shots on goal against the Juanita Rebels.

The Wolverines never found the back of the net.

Juanita junior forward Madison Rizer recorded the only goal of the night in the 49th minute of play, lifting the Rebels to a 1-0 victory against the Wolverines on Sept. 27 at Juanita High School in Kirkland. Juanita improved its overall record to 2-5-2 with the win while Bellevue dropped to 2-4-2 courtesy of the defeat.

Bellevue head coach Peter Cochran was proud of the way his team performed despite the setback on the scoreboard.

“The girls played a great game. Sometimes when you outshoot another team 25-4 the result still doesn’t go your way,” Cochran said. “Their new coaching staff has done a wonderful job with that team. They are as organized as any Juanita team that we’ve faced in years. Their keeper (freshman Lily Johnston) had an excellent game. When you go against a team that has a good keeper and is well organized, sometimes you launch 25 shots on goal and it doesn’t go in. All the credit to Juanita, they came to play and they deserved the win.”

Bellevue had several solid shots on goal in the second half but couldn’t capitalize on those opportunities. Bellevue’s best chance to score occurred in the 65th minute of play. Juanita’s keeper was caught in the field, leaving the goal wide open. Bellevue senior midfielder Malena Arduino unleashed a shot on goal on the ground that appeared to be heading for the back of the net. Juanita defender Karley Anderson covered for her teammate, getting between Arduino’s shot on goal and the back of the net. Anderson calmly cleared Arduino’s shot out of harms way for the Rebels.

“She has been a stellar player as our center back (defender) and has been great all year long,” Juanita head coach Lynn Glenn said. “Most importantly, we kept Bellevue off the scoreboard. We wanted the shutout. It was the second straight 1-0 win we’ve had. We are just building the program right now.”

Rizer, who scored the lone goal of the game, wasn’t even on the game program provided at the gate but delivered the proverbial knockout punch in the contest.

“We called Madison up from our JV team at midseason,” Glenn said.
