Kirkland-area swimmers move on to state swim championships

A pair of relay teams and three individual swimmers will represent the Kirkland area in the upcoming Class 3A Swim and Dive championships on Feb. 17 and 18 at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

Both Lake Washington and Juanita competed in the Class 3A Sea-King District championships on Feb. 10 and 11 at Mary Wayte Pool on Mercer Island, but all five entries had already qualified by meeting the state standard earlier in the year.

Juanita sophomore Kyle McWhirter finished fourth in the diving portion, held at Juanita High School on Feb. 11. McWhirter scored 274.8, finishing just behind Mercer Island’s Gabriel Neale.

Juanita senior Charlie Kullman finished fifth in the 100-yard butterfly in 53.35 seconds.

Lake Washington’s 200 medley relay team of Will Reeves, Jake Rinehart, Oliver Norred and Jeremiah Dunbar finished 12th overall.

The LW 200 freestyle relay — Rinehart, Louis Norred, Kyle Terao and Stephen McKinney — also finished 12th.

The Lake Washington 400 freestyle relay team made the finals, but did not meet a state-qualifying standard.

Bellevue won the 3A Sea-King District team title with 305 points.Juanita finished 13th with 20 points and Lake Washington was 17th with eight points.
