Surgical Care Affiliates, Inc. has made an investment in Kirkland-based SwiftPath, LLC, which develops evidence-based, rapid recovery protocols vetted by expert opinion that enable surgeons to provide patients with the option to have hip and knee replacements on an outpatient basis. SCA’s investment in SwiftPath will be used to expand the network of surgeons who are offering this important clinical option to patients in a safer and more cost effective manner.

Nationally, there is a significant opportunity to improve patient care and significantly reduce healthcare cost by migrating total hip and total knee replacements to an outpatient environment. Historically, these procedures have been performed in a hospital setting, followed by a one to three day hospital admission. SwiftPath’s protocols and care pathways have been proven by outcomes presented at The American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons in November 2015 and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons in March 2016. In their study of 200 knee replacements, Drs. Craig McAllister and Ira Kirschenbaum reported successful outcomes using the SwiftPath Method for joint replacement on an outpatient basis.

The SwiftPath platform includes patient engagement and education, patient selection criteria, and peer-reviewed surgical techniques. SwiftPath is also at the leading edge of new technologies that enable HIPAA secure, cloud-based homecare monitoring, patient reported outcomes, quality improvement, and other services that enable surgeons to provide patients with the option to have hip and knee replacements on an outpatient basis.

“Our relationship with SwiftPath provides SCA’s physician partners with an advanced capability to improve patient care in a more cost effective setting,” said Goran Dragolovic, Senior Vice President at SCA.

“SwiftPath is looking forward to continuing our mission of enabling surgeons to perform state-of- the-art joint replacement surgery with reduced pain and improved patient experience in the outpatient and early discharge settings,” noted Dr. Craig McAllister, SwiftPath President and Chief Medical Officer. “The SCA team shares our commitment to patients and goal to improve the quality of joint replacement care.”

As part of the partnership, Goran Dragolovic, SCA Senior Vice President, and Tim Buono, SCA Group Vice President of Development, will join SwiftPath’s board.
