Whitworth scored two goals in the first half and added another in the second to lift the Pirates to a 3-1 non-league victory over Northwest University (NU) as Whitworth opened their season on Friday.

Sam Engle opened the scoring for Whitworth (1-0-0) scoring in the 14th minute on an assist from teammate Jonah Snyder. The Pirates would make it a 2-0 game at 26:54 when Karl Muelheims would finish Austin Cassity’s pass for the score.

Northwest U (0-3-0) would close the gap to 2-1 with Kyle Zimmerman’s goal in the 37th minute. Freshman Trent Siedenburg earned the assist.

Meulheims scored his second goal and game clincher at the 63:55 mark to increase the Whitworth lead to 3-1.

Northwest U’s goalkeeper, Daniel Christenson, made nine save for the game taking the loss. Timmy Costa earned the win for Whitworth in goal with a total of seven saves for the Pirates. Whitworth out shot NU 19-13 with 11 corner kicks to Northwest’s four.
