Short-handed Juanita girls beat up on Interlake in tournament opener

The bench was a busy place on Friday evening at Lake Washington High School.

Juanita senior Brittany White, sidelined for the remainder of the year, sat with her fractured arm in a sling. Next to her sat junior Hannah Kleppe, donning dark sunglasses and out with a concussion.

At times, sophomore post Alexis Intong hobbled to the bench or the trainer’s room, once favoring an ankle, another instance holding her elbow. Midway through the third quarter senior Tea Adams fell so hard trainers darted to the baseline, ready to attend to another injured player.

Kleppe motioned them off the floor. “We can’t have anyone else out,” she said.

Juanita clamped down on defense in the first half, riding a big halftime edge for a 57-38 win over Interlake to open the Class 3A KingCo Conference tournament. The win puts Juanita into the conference semifinals against Mercer Island, but the Rebels won’t expect to be any healthier.

Adams led all scorers with 19 points, including nine for 11 from the free-throw line. Jayla Kidd scored 14 and freshman Brandi White added 12 points.

Juanita (9-5 KingCo, 14-8) dominated Interlake in both regular-season games, winning by an average of 27 points.

The Rebels held Interlake (2-12, 5-15) to just 11 points in the first half, and gave up a single field goal in the second quarter.

Interlake’s Courtney Wehner led the Saints with 12 points.

Next, Juanita is scheduled to play Mercer Island in the KingCo semifinals at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday evening at Mercer Island High School. The Islanders swept Juanita in the regular season, winning 64-39 in Jan. 7 and winning 63-50 on Jan. 18.

Juanita coach Todd Brink said he didn’t expect Kleppe, usually a starter, to return for the remainder of the conference tournament.

Three of the four remaining teams will move on to the Sea-King District Championships: Both teams in the conference championship game, and the winner of the third-place game.
