Second-half goals sink Northwest University | College soccer

No. 12 ranked Vanguard University (Calif.) scored two second half goals to break a scoreless tie and come away with a 2-0 non-conference win over Northwest University women's soccer team during he Holiday Inn Classic this today.

The teams played even and to a scoreless tie in the first half as neither team could manage a score with four shots a piece.

Vanguard broke through at the 60:54 mark as Ashley McCutcheon took Liliana Ruiz’s pass from the right side and put her shot into the lower right side and past NU goalkeeper, Lauren Patefield. In the 67th minute, it was McCutcheon assisting on Madison Cody’s goal as she would score from 13 yards out and into the right side of the goal. None of Northwest U’s 6 shots in the period would find the mark as Vanguard would improve to 4-0-1 on the season.

Lauren Patefield had three saves in goal for Northwest U (1-5-1) while Acacia Johnson and Rachel Saleen would each have shots for the Eagles. The teams finished with 10 shots in the game, both with 4 in the first half and six during the second.

Vanguard’s Terry Lauren earned the shutout with one save in goal for the Lions from Costa Mesa, Calif.  Jennifer Martin had six shots for VU, two shots on goal.

“Our ladies came out to play today and the game was very evenly played throughout,” said Val Seid, NU head coach. “In my opinion, we were the aggressor and just gave up a couple of unfortunate goals. We are getting to where we want to be.”

Northwest U will be at home Sept. 12 when they host Carroll College of Montana.
