Doomed by errors, the World Series run came to an end for the Kirkland Junior League softball team on Thursday with an 8-3 loss to Puerto Rico at Everest Park.

The loss knocked Kirkland, the tournament’s host team, from the elimination bracket in the quarterfinal round. Kirkland committed five errors and allowed three unearned runs — all in the first four innings.

Kirkland scored to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI triple from Sasha Mitchell, who hit the ball off the outfield fence to score Kaia Bradford.

Puerto Rico, which went 4-0 in pool play and remains the only undefeated team in the tournament, scored the next seven consecutive runs to take a 7-1 edge in the top of the fifth inning.

Mitchell led on offense with two RBIs on two hits. Kaci Gordon and Bradford each had two hits.

Jane Wilson got the start in the circle, going four innings with three earned runs and three strikeouts. Mackenzie Burke pitched the final three innings with two earned runs and three strikeouts.

Mitchell now has 13 RBIs through five tournament games.

Next, Kirkland is scheduled to play La Grange, Texas at 4:45 p.m. on Friday at Everest Park. La Grange, which won the Southwest Region, lost to Rowan, N.C. on Thursday.
