The Juanita High School girls basketball team’s season came down to facing a familiar foe in Bellevue during the district playoffs. But the loser-out game went to the Wolverines, 42-35, as suffocating second half defense ended the Rebel’s season Tuesday at Bellevue.
Juanita High graduate Sarah Nagashima, a member of the University of Arkansas No. 6-ranked gymnastics team, recently led the Razorbacks to a school-record score of 197.025 in a win against Auburn.
“That record-breaking score was all about us working at our potential as one,” said Nagashima. “I didn’t tell anyone before the meet, but I remember having this inkling in my mind that we were going to score a 197 that night. I don’t like to “jinx” things so I kept it to myself, but I think that belief in my team that we are a top scoring program is what makes the difference.”
John Muir 4th grader Eric Yang recently won the Washington State Elks Hoop Shoot Contest in Bellevue. Eric finished in first place by making 21 out of 25 free throw shots and beating five other kids from the state. The next level of competition will be the Northwest Regional Contest held in Oregon this week. Eric will represent Washington and compete against other state winners from Alaska, Idaho and Oregon.
Juanita junior wrestler Cody Treddenbarger’s regular season was good. He won all but two of his matches. Heading into the post season he was one of the wrestlers to watch. But his trek to the state title in the heavyweight division turned heads. Prep wrestling message boards began to light up with the posts of “Dread the Tred” after he swept his way through the 3A KingCo and district tournament with all pins. He only wrestled into the second round during one of those eight matches.
The Lake Washington boys basketball team (17-7) qualified for the state tournament and will play in the first round Wednesday at 5 p.m. at the Tacoma Dome against Wilson High School (18-8).
The team qualified for the state tournament Saturday with a win against Skyview of Vancouver at home, 67-55.
The Kangs began the game on fire, doubling Skyview’s point total during the first quarter 16-8. Lake Washington extended that advantage during the second quarter to take a 30-18 lead into the half. The Vancouver team cut into the lead during the opening minutes of the second half but the Kangs finished the game strong with 23 fourth-quarter points.

The Juanita High School girls basketball team held on to win their first Sea-King District tournament game in more than 20 years Monday, defeating Franklin 45-44.
The game, which took place on Franklin’s home court, began with the Rebels pulling out to a 13-5 lead after eight minutes of play. Juanita needed every one of those eight points during the next 24 minutes of play. Franklin slowly chipped away at the lead, taking four points off in the second quarter, one during the third and two more points off during the fourth quarter.
