Northwest University signs five athletes to women’s soccer team

Northwest University’s (NU) women’s soccer coach, Bryan Chud has signed five student athletes to attend and compete for the Eagles in the 2017 season.

Signing national letters of intent are: Mackenzie Monten of Snohomish, Stephanie Wilson of Kalispell, Mont., Katie Michkiosky of Wenatchee, AdriAnna Simmons of Ephrata, Wash. and Tawnya Thomsen of Loleta, Calif.

“All five of these players coming in already have experience at the collegiate level and therefore shouldn’t need a lot of time to adjust,” Chud said in an NU press release. “I am very excited to welcome each one of them to NU and I anticipate each one of them to make a big impact on our program here the next few years.”

According to the release, Monten is a sophomore transfer from Minnesota State University Moorhead, a NCAA Division II school. She played in 17 games the 2016 season for the Dragons. Monten was a three-year letter winner at Jackson High School in Mill Creek and helped her team to district championships in 2013, 2014 and 2015 and state championship playoff appearances all three years. She was selected as All-Wesco first team defender her senior year and also competed in track and field and holds school records for the 200-meter dash, four by 100-meter relay and 4 by 200-meter relay. Monten will be an elementary education major at NU.

“Mackenzie is coming to us as a left back who is eager to get involved offensively and will bolster our defense immediately,” Chud said in the release.

Wilson will be a sophomore and is a transfer from George Fox University in Oregon, where she started for the Bruins in 2016 and posted a 4.0 grade point average. She graduated from Flathead High School in Kalispell in 2016 and was named to the all-state team in her junior and senior years, the release states. In addition, Wilson was named team captain in her final season. She was named co-MVP for the west side of the state as a junior and earned all-conference honors as a sophomore. Wilson plans to major in nursing at NU.

“Stephanie is another midfielder who is very creative, tough in the tackle, extremely focused and hard-working and will score goals for us as well,” said Chud in the release.

Michkiosky is a junior transfer from Wenatchee Valley College (WVC) and will be an education major at NU. She was a team captain at WVC and earned an award in academic excellence. According to the release, she played prep soccer for Wenatchee High School, where she was named first team, all-league in the Big 9 Conference. Michkiosky also played select soccer for the Wenatchee Fire FC.

About Michkiosky, Chud said in the release, “Katie is a goal scoring midfielder who has tremendous ability and will make us even more potent offensively.”

Simmons is another junior transfer from WVC and plans on majoring in accounting at NU, the release states. She was a team captain at WVC and was named Northwest Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week. A 2015 graduate of Ephrata High School, Simmons was a team captain, first team All-Central Washington Athletic Conference, first team all-state goal keeper and all-league defensive MVP. Simmons was also a member of the National Honor Society, the release states.

“AdriAnna is a solid and accomplished goalkeeper who will bring experience and level-headed approach to the team,” Chud said in the release. “She is a strong competitor and we look forward to having her apart of the squad.”

Thomsen will be a junior and is a transfer from Mendocino College (MC) in Ukiah, Calif., where she was named first team, all-conference in 2016. Thomsen graduated from Fortuna High School in Fortuna, Calif., where she was team captain and earned a HDN All-County award in 2015. At MC, Thomsen helped lead her team to the 2016 Bay Valley Conference championship. She will major in management at the university.

“Tawnya is a box-to-box midfielder with great technical ability, field awareness, and physical ability,” Chud about Thomsen in the release.
