Local tennis players take home titles at Washington’s largest youth tournament

A handful of local tennis athletes walked away winners of Washington's largest youth tournament on Sunday, July 17 at Central Park Tennis Club in Kirkland.

A handful of local tennis athletes walked away winners of Washington’s largest youth tournament on Sunday, July 17 at Central Park Tennis Club in Kirkland.

Kirkland resident Soham Purohit won both the boys’ 12-year-old singles tournament and boys’ 12-year-old doubles tournament, defeating fellow Kirklander Vincent Yang 6-4, 6-2 in the singles final.

Purohit, who was the top seed in both divisions, and Yang met again in the doubles championship, with Purohit and Luke Sarausad of Sammamish winning 6-2, 6-2.

Central Park Tennis Club members nine division or consolation titles.

Hunter Egger, of Bellevue, won the boys’ 18-year-old singles division. Nedim Suko, of Kirkland, won the boys’ 16-year-old consolation prize with an 8-4 win over Luke Williams.

Colton Weeldreyer, of Sand Point, was part of the boys’ 18-year-old doubles title duo.

On the girls’ side, Karina Chao of Issaquah won the 16-year-old singles championship while Jessica Lang, an Interlake High School student, won the consolation title.

Medina resident Bridgette Angier won the girls’ 16-year-old doubles title with her partner, Yolanda Lin of Sammamish.

Kirkland’s Megan Pearson and Karina Chao of Sammamish paired to win the girls ’14-year-old doubles championship.

Brett Pearson, also of Kirkland, held the No. 1 seed in the boys’ 14-year-old singles tournament, but lost in the semifinals to Jack Mattox of Mercer Island.

In all, 318 players, from as far away as Alaska, Texas, Hawaii and Florida, competed in the annual tournament.
