Lake Washington girls blowout Bothell

The Lake Washington girls basketball team dissected Bothell Friday 53-29 in a game with very little drama.

But Kang head coach Cory Shepard was more impressed by the fact that his team won handily with some key players out due to injury.

“This is a big win for a couple of reasons,” said Shepard. “Our entire front line is out and we needed this win to stay in the hunt for the second seed.”

Both teams began the game with very little offense, combining for 14 first-quarter points. But the Kangs picked up the pace during the second quarter, outscoring their opponents by 11 and taking a 26-13 lead into the half. From there, Lake Washington pulled away by holding the Cats to just 16 second-half points.

“Samantha Brender really took over during the third quarter and that was huge,” said Shepard. “We are making improvements and I am really proud of our team.”

Three players finished with 11 points for the Kangs including Brender, Melissa Wilson and Sydney Miyake. For Miyake, it was a season high point total.

The win comes on the heels of a disappointing loss to Newport. The week finished with Lake Washington in a tie with Roosevelt at 7-7 for that second seed from the 4A KingCo Crown division with two game let on the regular season schedule. One of those games will take place Wednesday, as the Kangs travel to Roosevelt for a 7:30 p.m. tip off.
