Kirkland resident sets new course record in Tacoma Marathon for fun

Kirkland resident Shaun Frandsen continued his dominance of local marathons by setting a new course record in Tacoma on Sunday.

Kirkland resident Shaun Frandsen continued his dominance of local marathons by setting a new course record in Tacoma on Sunday.

Frandsen, 37, completed the ninth annual Tacoma City Marathon in 2 hours, 33 minutes and 14 seconds.

“Got a little carried away on my long run this morning,” Frandsen posted on Facebook. “Won the Tacoma City Marathon. Course record and [personal record] – 2:33:14.”

The previous course record was 2:38:11 set in 2008.

Frandsen, who pretty much led wire-to-wire, thought he could have done better and wanted to finish the course in less than two and a half hours.

He said that he had been training to participate in a marathon in Eugene but changed his mind when he realized it was on mother’s day. His wife recently gave birth to their second child.

“We made the plans to go down there with the whole family, but I would rather Heather gets a nice Mother’s Day at home where the day is all about her,” Frandsen said on Facebook. “And since I’m a little bit crazy, I jumped in the TCM last minute just for fun.”

The win came at the expense of two-time defending champion Bill Condon of Seattle, who Frandsen bested by five minutes.

The Tacoma race had a 26.2-mile course from the Tacoma Narrows Airport to Point Defiance Park.

Frandsen also won the 2014 Amica Insurance Seattle Marathon in December with a time of 2:34:21.
