Juanita’s John Nascimento wins regional heavyweight title, qualifies for Mat Classic

Juanita High junior John Nascimento won the heavyweight title at the Class 3A Region 4 wrestling tournament on Feb. 11 at the Juanita High School Fieldhouse.

Nascimento was one of two Kirkland-area wrestlers to qualify with an automatic bid for the upcoming Mat Classic, the Washington state championships, at the Tacoma Dome this weekend.

Nascimento pinned Redmond’s Ben Maier in the first round, then beat Prairie’s Wyatt Close, 3-1, in the semifinal. Nascimento outlasted Rodgers’ senior Markus Robinson in the championship match, winning by 1-0 decision.

Lake Washington junior Hunter Giffard also qualified, placing fourth in the 132-pound bracket. The top four wrestlers in each weight bracket qualified for the Mat Classic, plus an alternate.

Lake Washington had several wrestlers win alternate bids. Freshmen Max Reisman and Michaelo Degross, who met in the 106-pound KingCo title match, wrestled off for the alternate spot with Reisman winning by 12-6 decision.

Sophomore Zach Shuster won a 5-4 decision in the fifth-place match at 220 pounds, and Juanita’s Matthew Moehrle pinned his opponent in the fifth-place match at 182 pounds.

Lake Washington finished 11th as a team with 50 points. Juanita finished 12th with 48 points. Kelso won the regional tournament with 286 points.
