I’d propose that the mark of a civilized society is how much of life is in the private sector. I’d submit that the more society is non-governmental, the more civilized and sophisticated that society is. Like the kids who can play in the yard without the babysitter around, versus the kids who need the babysitter to oversee and breakup.

Graying of Kirkland

I must say, 15 years ago, I thought downtown Kirkland would go gay before it went grey, like Laguna Beach, California. But I was wrong. Now with Merrill Gardens, downtown Kirkland is officially a gray zone, walkers-with-tennis-balls and all. The grays mixed with the Tiki Joes 20-somethings and Central Club’s eclectic clientele is quite the mix.

President’s agenda not in constitution

Did you know that the Big three of Presidents Obama’s agenda – health care, education and energy – are not in the U.S. Constitution? They are not listed under Article I, Section 8’s government powers. These are the only legitimate powers enumerated in the Constitution. This means health, education and energy are to be left to the states (per the 10th Amendment), if at all, but certainly not with the feds.

Downtown Kirkland Library remodel

The downtown Kirkland library remodel seemed to take forever. I’d wager if the library were for-profit, that is, privately rather than publicly run, there’s no way it would have sat idle through the busy Kirkland summer season. No one owns the library but King County. If it were a bookstore or Blockbuster video rental, you’d never see it closed during the busy season. Once again, a great resource, one that is government run, is mis-utilized and underutilized.
