Edna Mewton: An endless volunteer

Edna Mewton is a model resident. She is always willing to help others whether she does this at her home, Aegis at Totem Lake or at Evergreen Hospital where she spends hours dedicating her time.

Edna recently received a letter from President Obama recognizing her volunteer efforts and the Presidential Service Award pin, along with a letter from Solid Ground’s RSVP program.

Her Blue Lifetime Award recognizes volunteers who have contributed over 4,000 hours of community service. Edna has volunteered for 15 years dedicating over 6,500 hours at our local hospital and Evergreen Healthcare.

Endless times when I visited a resident of our community at the hospital, I have ran into Edna in the hallways of Evergreen. I say run into her because she literally is running all over the place. She takes letters to the mail boxes, helps visitors and the hospital’s administration but her favorite duty ever was taking flowers to the new mom’s. Edna volunteers at Evergreen twice a week, every Tuesday and Thursday. During the rest of the week she serves as an Aegis ambassador. One of her duties as an ambassador is to welcome the new residents to Aegis and make them feel comfortable during the adaptation process.

Although it is not one of her ambassador duties, she introduces herself to most of our prospective residents and offers to talk to them about her wonderful experience in this community. The Kirkland community is very lucky to have a resident such as Edna!

Sandra Cook is the marketing director for Aegis at Totem Lake.
