Roof workers using a torch to loosen tar caused a piece of wood to catch fire on the rooftop of One Carillon Point condominiums earlier today.

The Redmond Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at approximately 4:25 p.m. and found smoke on the fourth floor, according to Ralph Ashmore, Redmond Fire captain. About a dozen residents were evacuated.

“So it (the call) was upgraded to a full response,” Ashmore noted.

Kirkland and Bellevue Fire departments were called to the scene and roof workers had already put out the fire, which was caused by a torch as a worker from an unknown company was putting flashing on the roof, an investigation later revealed. A two-by-four board caught fire next to the elevator shaft and heating system, which sucked smoke into the hallways on the third and fourth floors, said Mike Jeffery, Kirkland’s acting battalion chief.

“It’s a common incident on the roof that we see often,” said Jeffery, noting that the fire was “minor and kept in check and no one was injured.”

Outside the building, located at 5505 Carillon Point, Joanne Bayley stood with a group of fellow condo residents.

“The alarm went off strong,” she said, adding, “We smelled the smoke, too.”

Jeffery said he was thankful that the three fire agencies worked together to handle the situation.

No damages were reported.
