This past weekend the debate squad of Providence Classical Christian School in Kirkland competed in the National Qualifying Tournament of the National Speech and Debate Association. The national competition will be held in Salt Lake City in June. Only the two top pairs of debaters from the entire Puget Sound District qualify to move onto the national tournament.

Providence is excited to announce that one of its teams – Daniel Jekel and Wesley Su – qualified this past weekend for nationals, winning a narrow victory in a 2-1 split decision against a team that qualified for nationals last year.

“They needed a signature win in order to make it to Nationals, and they got it because they worked hard for it,” said the Providence debate coach Joe Hyink. “Their strategy was well-planned and well-executed. This is an exciting moment for our growing debate program and we are very proud of our qualifying team.”

Both boys are National Merit Finalists out of their senior class of 12 students.
