Northwest University athletes earned a number of the Cascade Collegiate Conference player of the week awards as announced by the league office in La Grande, Ore. Monday. Cassidy Brown earned runner of the week for women’s cross country; Daniel Christenson, men’s soccer defensive player of the week; Kelsey Greene, women’s soccer defensive player of the week; and Acacia Johnson, women’s soccer offensive player of the week.
Cassidy Brown (women’s cross country), a sophomore from Auburn, helped lead NU to the team title at the Wes Cook/George Fox Invitational. Brown’s time of 18-minutes, 34-seconds during the 5k course was good for the individual title among 59 runners.
Daniel Christenson (men’s soccer), a redshirt freshman from Bothell, had 180 shutout minutes in victories over Evergreen and Warner Pacific. The Eagle goalkeeper had 12 overall saves including seven in the second half against WPC and stopped a penalty kick in the Evergreen game which proved to be the difference in the 1-0 victory.
Kelsey Greene (women’s soccer), a junior from Sherwood, Ore., Greene was part of the NU defense which chalked up their fifth and sixth straight shutouts of the season. In addition to her defensive play, Greene had an assist in the victory over NCU and scored on a penalty kick against Corban on Saturday.
Acacia Johnson (women’s soccer), a senior from Puyallup, scored the game winner in both Eagle wins this week with a hat-trick in the 3-0 win over NCU. Against Corban, Johnson added her league-leading 12th goal of the season in the 2-0 win. The Eagles maintain their hold on first place in the CCC with a 5-0 record.
NU junior, Jonathan Ferguson (Cross Country) of Pleasant Hill, Ore., and senior Taylor Young of Bellevue, earned honorable mention honors as well.
