More snow days means less summer for LWSD students

Lake Washington School District students may have enjoyed several snow days last month, but they can look forward to a shorter summer break this year.

Due to the icy roads that caused three days of school closures last month from Dec. 17-19, the Lake Washington School District has decided to add three more days of instruction to the school year. The last day of school — previously scheduled for Tuesday, June 16 — has been moved to Friday, June 19.

The one-page copy of the school calendar, available on the district Web site (www.lwsd.org), notes that the school year may be extended due to inclement weather: this option ensures that students receive the full number of instructional hours. The district also prefers avoiding interruptions to already scheduled vacations during the school year, such as spring break and mid-winter break.

Should there be more days that school is closed this year due to inclement weather, further changes to the calendar may be necessary, officials say.

Lake Washington School District is a high-performing public school district serving Kirkland, Redmond, and Sammamish. It is the sixth largest district in the state of Washington, with over 23,000 students in 50 schools.
