LWHS team takes second at state ASL competition

A team of American Sign Language (ASL) students from Lake Washington High School — including Christina Brandao, Erika Chaffin, Zainab Malik and Nick LeMay — took second place at the Washington ASL competition recently held at Kent-Meridian High School in Kent.

There are several areas included in the competition:

  • Grammar, Culture, History, Industry (GCHI) test: a multiple-choice test covering information that should be taught in ASL 1-4.
  • Receptive Test: a multiple-choice test, students watch a video of different sentences and stories in ASL and answer multiple choice questions.
  • Individual Expressive Test: each student is given a picture and 10 minutes to plan what they will sign about the picture. They then sign their story for 1.5-3 mins in front of three judges.
  • ABC Story: As a team, students are given a prompt for a story and have 40 minutes to create, plan, and practice a signed story that includes each letter of the alphabet. This is then performed for three judges.

As a team, the LWHS students took second place in the ABC Story portion of the event.
