The Lake Washington High School football team got the 2014 season off to a good start Thursday with a 32-12 victory against Hazen at home.

But Kangs did not have a good start to the game, falling being 12-0 by the start of the second quarter thanks to a sustained touchdown drive by the team from Renton and a fumble recovery that was returned 98 yards for a touchdown.

The deficit did not deter Lake Washington, as the team marched down the field on its next drive. A five yard touchdown run by Riley Simonson cut the Hazen lead to just five points.

A rest at halftime sparked the Kangs, as they regrouped and came out throwing the ball around. Quarterback DJ Mann found Spencer Muller for a 30-yard touchdown pass to open the second half and take a two-point lead. Then the Kangs struck again on their next possession, as Mann finished off another drive by throwing a a seven yard touchdown pass to Braun Inslee.

Elliot Phillips took over the fourth quarter for Lake Washington. The senior running back found the end zone from ten-yards out to open the final quarter of play. But it was the last score of the game that most fans will remember as he sprinted 70 yards for a touchdown, putting over 100 yards rushing for the night.

The Kangs will host Blanchet at 5 p.m. on Sept. 12.
