More than a decade ago, a partnership between the Kirkland Rotary Club and John Muir Elementary began. They started a book club for fourth grade students who love to read. They meet once a week with the Rotarians and share books. Currently, there are five Rotarians who volunteer once a week to meet with 20-25 students during their lunch hour. They choose a book and read a few chapters each week. They then get together to talk about it.

“It’s a great program that our students really get excited about and enjoy the connection with an adult mentor as well,” said Muir Elementary library media specialist Tim Platt.

This relationship between John Muir and the Kirkland Rotary Club has led the Rotary to award the school library with a $3,000 grant for library books. John Pruitt, current Kirkland Rotary President, believes that Muir is a wonderful place for the grant. He sees firsthand how eager and appreciative the students are.
