Kirkland resident Bob Gray was the recipient of two awards for his service in World War II on Tuesday.

U.S. Sen. Patty Murray presented Gray with the Combat Infantrymen Badge, as well as a Bronze Star Medal With Valor for his bravery in France during the last days of the war.

Gray, who has lived in Kirkland since 1963, recently traveled to France with his daughter and son-in-law to revisit some of the battle sites. He shared some stirring observations and thoughts about his service and also about the inspirational and grateful welcome he received from residents of the French region in which he served.

Gray can often be found many mornings having coffee with his wide circle of friends at Rococo Cafe in Kirkland. A large group of these friends, along with his daughter and family, attended the presentation at Murray’s office in Seattle.

Gray presented the senator with one of his famous balloon animals in exchange for his medals.
