Following a public hearing at its meeting on Sept. 16, the Kirkland City Council unanimously approved extending the interim zoning regulations it adopted in June for the retail sale of recreational marijuana.
The interim regulations allow for the retail sale of marijuana in the Light Industrial Technology (LIT) zones where at least 50 percent of the boundaries of the zone are contiguous to commercial zones and prohibit the sale in Market Street Corridor Zones 1 and 2 and on property abutting a street designated as a School Walk Route. The extension becomes effective five days after publication and expires in six months.
The City Council directed staff to return with additional information on potential regulations to address odor from marijuana businesses and it will continue to discuss strategies for adopting permanent regulations.
Kirkland’s interim regulations for marijuana retail uses are in addition to the restrictions required by the Washington State Liquor Control Board (WSLCB) implemented as a result of the passage of Initiative 502 by Washington voters.
