Shelley Kloba announced her intention to run for re-election to the Kirkland City Council, Position 2 on April 23. During an event at Ryan James Fine Arts last weekend, she highlighted her work locally, regionally and nationally. She reaffirmed her commitment to smart growth, responsible budgeting and transportation solutions that work for everyone, according to a release.
“My daughter will graduate from high school in June, and that keeps me focused on the kind of community that we are leaving to the next generation,” Kloba said. “We must protect the quality of our air and water. We must maintain and enhance our infrastructure. We must also ensure that everyone, including our young people and our senior citizens, can afford to live here. “
Kloba has served on the council since March 2013. She chairs the Public Works, Parks and Human Services committee, and serves on the City/School District Coordinating Committee. She has been an advocate for the creation of a community aquatic and recreation center to fill a long-standing need in the community for more indoor recreation space.
Kloba has testified in Olympia behalf of the city on revenue and public safety matters. In March, she traveled to Washington D.C. to attend the National League of Cities Legislative Conference. Along with Councilmembers Jay Arnold and Penny Sweet, she lobbied federal legislators on issues important to Kirkland’s economic development and traffic congestion.
“If successful, our efforts should lead to funding for new on and off ramps from I-405 Northeast 132nd Street in the Totem Lake area,” Kloba said.
Kloba has lived with her husband Tony and daughter Kate in the Juanita area of Kirkland since 2001 and has served on the Kirkland Park Board, assisted on the Kirkland park levy committee, volunteered for the Lake Washington School District Citizens’ Levy and Bond committee, and is a trustee of the Lake Washington Schools Foundation.
Kloba volunteered for 11 years for the Parent Teachers Association, culminating in a two-year term on the Washington State PTA Board as the Legislative Director in June, 2011. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology from the University of Illinois, and graduated with honors from Seattle Massage School in 1996. She is employed at the Donaldson Clinic in Mill Creek.
