Kirkland chuch in Super Bowl food drive competition with New England churches

The Seahawks are off to the Super Bowl to face the Patriots on Sunday and officials at Lake Washington United Methodist Church in Kirkland have decided it’s a great idea to beat New England both on and off the field. The United Methodists in the Northwest have come together to challenge the United Methodists in the Northeast to a food drive. Bishop Grant Hagiya contacted Bishop Devadhar the day after the NFC title game, and they both were up for the challenge.

The big game is coming up, so bring the donations to LWUMC any time between now and game day. Non-perishable food donations are accepted at the church any time from 7 a.m. and 9 p.m., and monetary donations can be given in to the church office or on the LWUMC website. The general rule is that one dollar equals one can. The final count will be the morning of Feb. 2.

The donations will be sent to Pantry Packs and Hopelink. Pantry Packs is a local non-profit organization with the goal of keeping hungry kids fed. Though these kids get free and reduced meals at school, they don’t have much help over the weekends or holidays, so Pantry Packs provides backpacks to schools filled with kid-friendly food to send home with kids when needed. Hopelink, which Pantry Packs is a part of, is a non-profit food bank for everyone needing assistance in the community. To learn more about Hopelink, visit www.hope-link.org.

Last year LWUMC raised over 4,500 cans when they challenged Denver, so this year they’re hoping for the ultimate goal of 10,000 cans. Anyone can participate. To check on progress, follow LWUMC on Facebook, www.facebook.com/LakeWAUMC.
