The recent Winter edition of the Eagle Scout Magazine published by the National Eagle Scout Association (NESA) lists the 2011 NESA Scholarship recipients, and Kirkland’s Dallen Smith is shown receiving one of the seven Western Region NESA Academic Grants.
Dallen earned his Eagle Scout Award in 2007 at the age of 14 and also received the 2011 Daniel and Bernice Eagle Scout Scholarship given by the Chief Seattle Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Dallen follows in the footsteps of his brother, Derrek, who also earned the Eagle Scout Award at age 14 in 2004. Derrek received the Bruce Kennedy Eagle Scout Scholarship from the Chief Seattle Council in 2008.
The boys took their scouting participation to a new level by advancing in the BSA Venturing program, where they earned multiple awards (including the Gold, Silver, and Trust for Dallen) and additional Eagle Palms; and they participated in a Kodiak Trek together at the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico.
Dallen also attended the 2010 Centennial National Scout Jamboree as a Patrol Leader for his troop and is a member of the Order of the Arrow. The boys both graduated from Lake Washington High School.
Dallen is attending Brigham Young University pursuing a degree in Manufacturing Engineering. He received additional scholarships from LWPTSA Council, Kirkland Kiwanis, BYU Alumni, and BYU.
Dallen received music honors and awards while at LW and earned the 2011 “Semper Fidelis” Award for Musical Excellence from the Marine Corp. The Rotary Club of Kirkland also recognized him in their Student of the Month Program.
Derrek attended BYU with Eagle Scout and University Alumni scholarships until 2010 when he accepted a call to serve as a missionary for the LDS church working with the Haitian population in Florida, speaking the Creole language.
He has worked with scouts in his assigned areas, helping them prepare for scout camps, earn rank advancements, and complete Eagle projects. Derrek will return to BYU in the fall to complete his degree in Information Systems Management.
