Each year many Lake Washington Elementary library media specialists sponsor a “Battle of the Books” for fourth- and fifth-grade students at their schools. The competition begins at the school level and builds to a district-level contest. This year, 15 Lake Washington School District elementary schools participated. For the second year in a row, three fifth-grade students, Ella Doherty, Eliza Mannion and Madeleine Tremblay from Frost Elementary, won the event.

Library media specialists selected 12 books, including many award-winning and popular books. The student teams read the books and then battled each other to see who could answer the most questions correctly about each book. Among the schools participating, there were nearly 200 teams of fourth and fifth grader students. The district was split between the east and west side, and battles took place between the schools in their respective divisions. Then a final battle took place between the winning teams of east and west. This year, the final battle was between the winning teams at Carson Elementary (east division) and Frost Elementary (west division). The final battle was intense, ending in a “sudden death” battle to break a tie between the two evenly-matched teams in favor of Frost.
