A fire that ripped through two stories of an apartment building in Totem Lake yesterday and took 19 fire units from at least five fire departments to contain has displaced at least six people.

No injuries to firefighters or residents were reported.

The fire at the Juanita Brook Apartment complex at 11240 N.E. 132nd St. was initially reported just before 2 p.m. by a resident who noticed smoke coming out of her attached, outdoor storage unit. Firefighters arriving on the scene within minutes saw smoke billowing from the roof on the backside of the building and quickly upgraded the response to a full two alarm fire.

Fire investigators are calling the blaze accidental, focusing on a possible faulty light switch in one of the building’s storage units, said Charles Andrews of the King County Sheriff’s Office.

The fire burned through four units and damaged four others as firefighters work to put out the blaze. Firefighters had the fire under control within 30 minutes, but it took at least another hour to completely put it out because it had spread to a difficult-to-access attic.

Initial estimates put damages at $300,000 to the building and another $30,000 to personal belongings. Four adults and two children were displaced.

The fire could easily have been worse, said Jack Henderson, Deputy Chief of the Kirkland Fire Department, but fire units responded quickly from a station next door at 11210 N.E. 132nd St.

Following the evacuation, Kirkland Fire Department Chaplain Bill Tate escorted a mother and her children to the fire station next door.

The Red Cross was called in to assess the need for overnight shelter and other emergency needs of the displaced tenants.
