Assistance League of the Eastside provides baskets of basic household items for individuals and families fleeing domestic violence, enabling them to begin new lives in safe, violence-free housing.

Through the Starting Over Support program, volunteers prepare and send the baskets to domestic violence emergency shelters in King County.

Since 1992, Assistance League of the Eastside has provided support and encouragement to over 13,000 survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence.

Starting Over Support works with Eastside Domestic Violence Program (EDVP) to identify basic needs of victims entering emergency housing. Among other essential items in the baskets are new towels, laundry detergent, hairdryers and hygiene items.

This past year 60 welcome baskets were delivered to families in shelter.

Last week, EDVP team member Chelle Hunsinger addressed the January chapter meeting of the Assistance of the Eastside and stressed the important role that these baskets play in the new lives of survivors.

For families who have so often fled with nothing, to be welcomed with something new that is theirs to keep, has a profound effect.

During December, trained Assistance League of the Eastside members organized a family holiday party at a secure location. Chapter members baked dozens of cookies for decorating and a variety of games and activities were enjoyed by all. In the last year, over 300 survivors of domestic violence were supported by our chapter.
