100 Hounds of Kirkland

It was a “dog help dog world” for Catherine Handfelt Thursday as she joined hundreds of fellow Kirkland residents – and their pooches – on Park Lane.

As part of her “100 Hounds of Kirkland” project, the local photographer took pictures of nearly 200 dogs in Kirkland storefronts and landmarks over the summer. During the Second Thursdays on Park Lane art event, the participants gathered to bark the vote and throw in a dollar for their favorite pooch to win a spot on the calendar that Handfelt will put together. The calendar will be available in late October at various local retailers.

During the event, dog owners bid for their dog to be featured on the 2010 calendar’s front cover. The cover went to Boomer, whose owners Susan and Don Taylor bid $800 for the spot. Susan works for Liberty 123 and Boomer originally inspired the project.

Handfelt is still busy counting the votes and donations, which will benefit the Seattle Humane Society. So far, the count is well into the thousands, she said.

In the meantime, interested parties can make a donation to Northwest Cellars in Kirkland that has a special “Rescue Red” wine. Twenty percent of the sale proceeds with go to the Seattle Humane Society as part of the 100 Hounds effort. For information, visit www.northwestcellars.com.
