Nine-year-old Nathan Hackley, of Kirkland, recently showcased his artwork during a wine tasting party in his honor at the Gallery Wine and Art shop in Kirkland.

Since the shop opened on Market Street in February, shop owner Marcke Lhyle has displayed the work of various artists, including an emerging artists wall that mainly showcases the work of kids.

Nathan has sold five of his art pieces so far at $25 each. But instead of spending money on video games or movies, he donated all proceeds to the Providence Hospice of Seattle Foundation, earmarking the money to help pediatric hospice patients.

“People said they loved this and we said it was a 9-year-old child,” Nathan’s mother, Laura Hackley said of her son’s artwork. “Nathan is the top selling artist in the shop right now.”

Hackley said her son is a pretty generous kid – often asking his buddies to donate money to a cause instead of giving him birthday presents. And a few years ago on Christmas, he and Hackley bought and delivered gifts to hospice families that couldn’t afford to buy presents.

So it didn’t surprise Hackley when Nathan said he’d rather donate the proceeds from his paintings to charity instead of keeping them himself.

“Because these are kids it resonates with a child a little more. He thinks this is cool,” she said.

The gallery hosted a “Friends of Hospice” wine tasting party on May 12. All tasting proceeds benefited Providence Hospice of Seattle’s pediatric hospice program. Twenty percent of sales on bottles were also be donated to Providence Hospice.
