Summer concerts return to Kirkland parks

A pair of Kirkland parks will be alive with music throughout the summer as the Tuesday and Thursday concerts return for another year of melodious entertainment.

A pair of Kirkland parks will be alive with music throughout the summer as the Tuesday and Thursday concerts return for another year of melodious entertainment.

The Thursday evening series at Marina Park is scheduled to begin on July 7 at 7 p.m. with Rear View Mirror, a 1960s-esque pop band. Robin Weakland and Kat Cannon are on lead vocals of this group, whose repertoire features songs from the Beatles, the Monkees, the Carpenters, Bee Gees and more.

On July 14, former Seahawk Craig Terrill returns with his popular rock band. Terrill has played twice in Kirkland and once in Bothell this year, with another performance planned at Kirkland Uncorked on July 16.

The third evening date brings another 1960s-era group, Spyrographs, which play the best spy, pop and surf hits from the ’60s — think James Bond and Secret Agent Man.

A Pretenders cover band, Jealous Dogs, comes on July 28.

Kirkland-based Geoffrey Castle brings his electronic violin for a modern take on Celtic music on Aug. 4.

The evening series features a doubleheader on August 11 in conjunction with the Summerfest Celebration kickoff. Redline, a classic rock’n’roll group, performs from 5-7 p.m., while Vaudeville Etiquette, alternative country, performs from 8-10 p.m.

The Summerfest Kickoff date includes food trucks and a beer garden, for the first time in the event’s 39-year history.

A reggae/rock/grove group, Longstride, is scheduled to close the Thursday concert series on Aug. 18. Evening concerts, with the exception of the Summerfest date, are scheduled to finish by 8:30 p.m.

The Tuesday series is geared toward kids, with concerts running from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Juanita Beach Park.

The morning concerts, which have been at Juanita Beach four years, feature a handful of returning artists.

Cowboy Buck & Elizabeth, a husband-and-wife team full of musical comedy, dance, sing-alongs and ventriloquism, are scheduled to open the series once again, on July 12.

On July 19, Eric Herman and the Thunder Puppies come to Kirkland morning concerts for the first time. Herman has been featured on PBS Kids, Fox & Friends and The Today Show with his predictable blue shirt, slacks and yellow tie.

Another new show, All Around This World, comes July 26. Product of Philadelphia-based Jay Sand, the show uses music to help kids explore the different cultures across the globe.

Johnny Bregar returns on Aug. 2, bringing his catchy sound and a mixture of jazz, blues, folk and pop with a kid-centered twist.

Recess Monkey, a band comprised of three teachers, is scheduled for Aug. 9. This group has been noted by People and Time Magazines, USA Today, The New York Times and National Public Radio as one of the top ‘Kindie’ bands in America.

Pink polka-dots, pink stripes and a likely pink tutu will adorn the stage on Aug. 16 with ‘The Not It’s!’. The quintet has released several albums aimed at the younger crowd. All five members have at least one child, and their website warns, “this music is to be listened to under the supervision of children!”

Closing the Tuesday concert series is a familiar favorite, Caspar Babypants. Chris Ballew, former lead singer and bassist of The Presidents of the United States, performs with a three-string guitar in a show targeted toward toddlers on Aug. 23.

All concerts, in both the morning and evening, are free to the public.
